My final day on Daydream Island was my one day of real vacation.
When I was planning this Australia trip, I only added a couple of days in the Whitsundays as an afterthought so that I could have a little bit of R&R before heading back to Europe. It was a good decision!
I spent some time in the pool, wandered around the island, lunch, back in the pool, a little more wandering, tea. A lovely, restful day. I did some reading and some thinking and found some clarity on things I’ve been pondering. Things become easier when you have nothing else to think about.
The first time I came to the Whitsundays, I stayed in a self-catering beach bungalow on Long Island (and actually mastered the dark art of gettIng into a hammock). My plan this time was to stay on Hamilton Island where there is more going on but I couldn’t find an accommodation option that worked which is how I ended up staying in the resort on Daydream Island.
The resort is literally all there is on the island but there is still lots to do. One of the best collection of pools that I’ve come across, four bars including one swim-up bar, two restaurants, two snack options, an ice cream shack, watersports, an outdoor cinema, a spa and a living reef with various experiences on offer. And possibly more kangaroos than people. I would go back in a heartbeat (I gave serious consideration to not leaving).
I love the fact that living on an island you have to get a boat to go anywhere although it was kind of funny the day I got the 07:45 ferry to go to the Great Barrier Reef to see all the hotel staff arriving for work by boat. With more days, I would have used the ferries to explore more places but that’s just another reason to come back.
I ended my final evening watching the sunset in Lover’s Cove (with lots of families, not many lovers) while planning to return one day.
