Getting rid of stuff

Lenny September 8, 2015 Minimalism, Preparation 2 Comments 2993 Views

It is obvious from my Internet history that my key areas of interest are travel and minimalism. I like to travel light and keep things simple but somehow I still manage to have an apartment full of stuff.

Unsurprisingly this is not a situation that I’m happy with and I have made periodic attempts to declutter. This is now rather more urgent though as I am about to embark on a semi-nomadic lifestyle and it is time for me to get rid of everything (well, almost everything) I own. And that’s kind of overwhelming.

Someone suggested to me that I should just let my friends take over as they could be more objective. But I think that this is something I need to do myself. Deal with all the memories attached to my stuff whilst trying to avoid the self-criticism that I spent so much money on things I clearly don’t need.

When it’s done, I know it will be a relief, I just can’t figure out where on earth to start. The thing I need to focus on though is that it doesn’t really matter where I start, I just need to start somewhere. And then, when it’s done, I can head off to create new memories that don’t clutter up my physical space.

    Hi!
I totally understand what you mean! Moving many times, and most notably across the Atlantic forced me to get rid of many of my belongings, for the best!
I’ve been famous amongst my friends for my impressive shoe collection, displayed at the entrance of my apartment in Geneva. It’s now gone. I now own, few and better stuff. I spend much less time thinking about things and more doing things!
I didn’t know about your plans, I saw that Véronique posted the link to your blog on Facebook, I’m so glad she did!
As for me, I launched a blog YESTERDAY where you can follow my journey to a simpler, greener and happier life!
And also, the book “L’Art de l’essentiel” by Dominique Loreau helped me start this journey to minimalism. Of course, you’ll have heard about Mary Kondo, I haven’t read her book yet, but it’s on my list.
Good luck with everything! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of your posts and wait impatiently for the next ones!
