My visit to Castle Bled was a collection of epic fails and misadventures. Still one of the most stunning places on earth though.
The weather forecast was for heavy rain in the afternoon so I decided the best plan was to get up really early, go up to the castle and be back down in town before it started raining. So I set three vibrating alarms to make sure that I got out of bed.
No need! One of the people in my dorm decided that it would be much more effective to wake me at 05:30 by snoring like a lawnmower. I wish I was kidding, I seriously thought that someone was cutting the grass. But, hey, I got up early.
Epic fail #1 – Not packing any food
My plan had involved having a nice Sunday morning breakfast in a cafe down by the lake before heading to the castle. Apparently things don’t open that early in Bled on a Sunday morning so I had to head off breakfastless.
Epic fail #2 – Forgetting hills are bad
Castle Bled is at the top of a hill (this did not come as a surprise, I knew where I was going) but the combination of first thing in the morning and no sustenance meant that the ascent was damned hard work!
But – VICTORY – I did arrive at the castle literally as it opened for the day so I had the place to myself. And by 10:15, I was back down by the lake having a lovely breakfast.
Lake Bled is simply gorgeous and the castle is one of the places that gives you great views down over the whole lake. It was worth the hardships I faced to get there ;-).
