So I walked from Locarno to Ascona. Normally I would catch a boat or a bus but I checked the map and it looked walkable in about 90 minutes. Probably not the best idea given the temperatures today but pretty much par for the course for me.
I headed out along the shores of the lake, curved round the Locarno Lido (and regretted not bringing my swimsuit) and then headed inland along the banks of the river.

It was more peaceful by the river, despite the public holiday, and other than a few cyclists and dog walkers, I had the path to myself. There were probably more people in the river, swimming and paddle boarding, than there were alongside it.
Eventually I reached a pedestrian footbridge, with a busy cycle lane, across the river. Then it was a case of heading inland away from the river (where it was even warmer) until I reached the center of Ascona.

I rewarded myself with an ice cream but I should have stuck to my usual haunts as it wasn’t as good as my favorite ice cream place in Ascona. The cherries in the Amarena were amazing though.

I had about an hour to wander round Ascona and along the lake front before catching a boat back to Locarno (only 30 minutes for the return journey). And by then I was ready for pasta. I might not be in Italy but the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland is pretty close.

All in all, not bad for a travel day.
